Our Story
Ash & Cassie Edwards, a couple of country kids with strong roots in the local community. Ash grew up on the farm in Deep Creek. While Cassie came from Normanville, a short thirty kilometres to the north. They first met at the local high school, although it wasn’t until a few years later when their paths crossed again it was obvious they were meant to live their lives together.
Many adventures, a lot of laughter, and a sneaky elopement later, you’ll still find them side by side, best of friends, living life together.
Ash pursued a life of organic market gardening, while Cass sought training as a horticulturist. As is often the case with these industries, times are sometimes challenging. Both Ash & Cass sought extra employment in a local resort working in a busy restaurant kitchen. Burning the candle at both ends, Ash & Cass longed for a more simple life. It was at this stage when a spanner was thrown into the mix. Cass sustained a workplace injury to her back. This resulted in a long recovery and another change in direction followed. Cass retrained in the real estate industry, while Ash continued on celery farming by day and cooking by night. Fast forward a couple more years and something had to change. Ash working in hospitality into the early hours of the morning, and Cass heading off to the real estate office each day meant time together was a distant memory. Those who know Ash & Cass well knew this simply wasn’t a long term solution.
Enter Celery Patch Knives. While working in the commercial kitchen Ash found a love for the culinary industry, and it wasn’t long until the tools of the trade became a focus. At first knife making was nothing more than a hobby, but it wasn’t long until it became apparent his passion of making culinary tool was just the beginning of something much bigger.
The farm workshop was transformed into a metal and wood workers paradise. The first large investment being a power hammer, and before long a hydraulic press was built, followed by a roll mill, forge, kiln, CNC plasma cutter, hardness tester, milling machine and a pair of grinders.
Days off were filled with training, testing, practicing, experimenting and more. Ash became obsessed with the fine details of the craft. Steel grain structures, stabilising of Australian hardwoods, every kind of fastener known to man, forging techniques, heat control, heat treatment procedures and everything between. I would be a further two years before he was content to offer the knives for sale.
At the same time Cass took a keen interest in screen printing and created a range of hand printed apparel, tea towels, mugs and packaging. Together they created the Celery Patch Knives we know today. You’ll find Ash & Cass side by side hand sanding knives together before every show, and they enjoy dropping into to visit other makers while traveling. They recently visited Fingal Ferguson in Ireland, and Tomer Botner at Florentine Kitchen Knives in Barcelona.
Cassie has worked her way up in the real estate industry and is now found selling houses and rural properties all over the Fleurieu Peninsula. Ash has a part time position working in the very same school he and Cass first met at all those years earlier, working as a groundsman. This has allowed for more freedom of time, and a wonderful balance of off-farm and on-farm activities.
Moving forward Ash & Cass have grand plans including growing, preserving, and cooking as much food as possible off the land. This will include a mix of personal and commercial farming, along with a lot of projects they’ve always planned on executing. Chicken pens, glass houses, agroforestry, timber milling, workshop improvements and more.
A priority will be the establishment of a space where fellow makers can visit and enjoy getting their hands dirty themselves. Be it making a fire pit to cook dinner, a custom culinary knife, or a hand carved piece of furniture, the goal is to create a welcoming space to be creative.
